Overview

Description
Uberspace is a multiplayer online space shooter with persistent player ranks and stats, supporting up to 128 players per game, each with the opportunity to advance through diverse roles such as scout fighter pilot, squad leader, and even intergalactic armada commander. It is a hybrid RTS and squad-based, competitive game that emphasizes leadership and rewards team oriented game play. The world and models are fully 3D, combining the classic 2D game feel with a modern 3D engine.

Competitive team-based combat
Uberspace is a fast paced and highly competitive game. Players are divided into four teams (each representing one of four player races), and contend against each other for control of the galaxy in several classic game types or the core, unique game type Conquest.

Grand strategy and fast tactics in one game
Players can take on one of many diverse roles and are rewarded for their performance in that role. These roles include exploration, mining, discovering ancient technologies and artifacts, subjugating planets, or just killing your friends.

Classic Game Types

Free For All
This is the basic space shooter. Each player is pitched against every other player on the server. Upgrades to ships and technology are achieved through power-ups and points granted from kills.

Team Deathmatch
Like the FFA game type, except with team cooperation.

Team Capture the Flag
Teams race to grab the flag in the middle of the map and return it to their base while attempting to prevent enemy teams from doing the same.

Sector Siege
One team is designated to attack, while the other team defends. Certain technologies are granted to each side from the start with commanders coordinating strategy.

Conquest Game
The team based game connecting players within a military chain of command. One player takes the role of commander, in charge of up to 10 squads each with its own squad leader.

Each team starts with one planet and a fully equipped and upgraded space station.

Players discover and conquer planets by defeating indigenous armies and then ferrying troops from a friendly planet to establish a new colony.

Different types of planets contribute different resources needed for industrial production, troop training, and technology research. Additionally, technologies are found via planetary conquest through discovery of ancient alien artifacts and blueprints.

Players mine asteroids for common and rare minerals needed to fund initial research of team technologies.

The commander is responsible for manipulating supply lines to keep planets productive. As each planet contributes resources to its owning team, the commander decides how to allocate those resources to build his empire. To control conquered space, the commander builds and upgrades new space stations -- the key means of projecting military power over sectors of space.

Station Technology
Each station has 7 possible upgraded states:

Base Station - Provides radar and buildable areas where turrets and mine fields can be deployed. This also provides a single powerful defensive turret.

Refinery - Resource drop point for minerals found on asteroids. Also allows a trade route to be established to supply planets.

Garrison - Hold troops to defend against enemy attack (but does not produce them).

Repair Bay - Allows ships to repair armor, refit equipment, and swap out cargo and accessory slots.

Shipyard (requires Repair Bay) - Allows players to respawn at this station, to change ship type, and to teleport to other stations with shipyards.

Officer's Quarters - Adds a defensive area of effect, providing increased shield regeneration for friendly players in the area.

High Command (requires Officers Quarters) - Adds a second station turret, and increases firepower of nearby friendly ships.

Ship Types

Scout Class - the weakest yet most maneuverable of ships, great for dodging asteroids, mines and enemy fire.

Cruiser Class - the fastest ship and best for intercepting enemies and ideal for flag running.

Destroyer Class - with hefty firepower and armor, this is the strongest of the single pilot ships. To gain this strength it sacrifices speed and maneuverability.

Dreadnaught Class - a mobile battle station and spawn point allowing squads to stay together in combat. Players can dock with a Dreadnaught and man one of its many powerful turrets, or just repair and refit.

Ship Technologies
Basic ship upgrades include: Engines, Armor, Shields, Missiles, Guns, and Generators

These base upgrades exist on all ships, including the Dreadnaught. Players can spend cash gained from mining, exploration, killing enemy players, and completing team objectives to upgrade their level in each of these categories. Each category is upgraded independently.

Research lines include:

Sensor upgrades
This allows the radar to pick up ships from a greater distance. Further research in sensors will allow the radar to pick up which direction ships are facing, and even display mines and missiles.

Stealth
Conceals the player from enemy radar at distance, although visual detection is unaffected.

Cloaking - the perfect complement to stealth, this allows a ship to be hidden from sight, effectively becoming invisible on screen. Radar detection is unaffected.

Thruster Technology - one of the higher priced technologies, this allows for added maneuverability such as afterburner, strafe and roll.

Other technologies include mult-fire, homing missiles, extra cargo space, mine fields, mine sweeping, and missile detonation

Races and Story
The four races detailed below are the only intelligent life known to mankind. All four races live within 32 light-years of Earth, and are continually contesting the resources found in the over 130 star systems in this region of interstellar space.

The theories on alien life promoted by astronomers such as Carl Sagan were proved to be utterly incorrect by the races mankind has encountered so far. Sagan argued that evolved, intelligent life would have reached a state of peaceful interaction with its neighbors. However, all life encountered by astronauts has proven to be much like life on Earth - greedy, opportunistic, and expansionistic. There seems to be a food chain of sorts, even in space.

Terrans
The Terrans are, of course, humans. Their star system is known as "Sol", an ancient name for the Sun. The name "Terran" was adopted shortly after the first Interstellar War began and the old nations of Earth formed under one unified government: The Federal States of Terra.

The Terrans were already colonizing their own system when contact was made with the Kortani (see below). The Kortani shared some advanced technologies with the Terrans, allowing them to make the jump into interstellar space. The excitement of this event was dampened when the Kortani attacked the outer colonies of the solar system, plunging Terra into its first Interstellar War.

Since this event, mankind has discovered several other forms of life, all utterly alien. Most of these have been very simple, and some evolved enough to communicate. Only three have been found that are capable of space travel, and all are hostile. The names of the races below are human terms. None of the three races use sound as a form of communication, and all their messages to man have been mathematical codes.

Kortani
The Kortani were named for Shazira Barzani al-Kortani, an Iranian radio astronomer. She oversaw the SETI project that first discovered their communications in the late 21st century. At that time, the Kortani were already seasoned interstellar travelers, but desired to meet the people of Earth as they not yet met another form of intelligent life. They sent several messages detailing the technologies necessary for interstellar travel to Earth to enable mankind to meet them in the Sirius system. However, as soon as the Kortani had traded for all the human technologies they desired, they began raiding the Sol system. Mankinds defenses actually proved to be formidable, and the Kortani were driven off.

The Kortani are master resource industrialists. They study and exploit whatever they encounter in their travels, usually leaving star systems devoid of planetary bodies. Biologically, they form what is known as a composite being. Individual Kortani are microscopic, but they combine to form ever larger beings capable of extraordinary intelligence. This makes them a dangerous enemy - millions of them can combine to form brains capable of amazing acuity.

Ulin
If any race can claim ownership of the systems in dispute, it is the Ulin. They are the nomads of space, having no planetary system to call home. They have evolved entirely in space, and were probably born in cometary clouds such as those lying just outside the Sol system. They migrate from system to system, carefully harvesting the resources but never exhausting them.

The Ulin are a highly evolved species. Their "ships" are actually not vessels at all, but the immature offspring of the adult Ulin. There are four stages of evolution of the Ulin: pupa, soldier, drone, and queen. Only a queen is large enough to travel between systems and found a new hive. Between each stage, the Ulin undergoes chrysalis in the hive stations which act as bases in each system which the Ulin operate.

Altoren
The Altoren evolved in the Altair system where they swam in the gravitational eddies generated by the fields of the planetary bodies and their sun. As these eddies and zephyrs became increasingly complex, matrixes developed. These matrixes took on the ability to separate gravitational energies from themselves, thereby creating offspring. They also learned to bind energy to their being, creating larger matrixes. These matrixes eventually gained the ability to bind matter to themselves as well. Over the millennia, the Altoren were able use this matter to increase their ability to sail in the winds of the Altair system. Eventually, they were able to sail at ever greater speeds, enabling them to travel beyond their own system.

While their own system has abundant heavy metals, the Altoren seek new systems for matter that enable them to bind new materials to their matrix. This has brought them in continuous conflict with other races.
